On May 2nd, 2023, Jane Hartsook Herb, beloved wife, life partner (54 yrs) and best friend of Charles (Butch) Herb went to be with the Lord. She was 75 years old. Jane was born to Leonard and Larue Hartsook, and has lived in the Gadsden area her entire life. Jane had an undergraduate degree from Jacksonville State University, and her Masters in Education was from the University of Alabama.
Jane’s life calling was teaching, and she taught for 30 years in the Gadsden City School system. Most of her time was spent teaching 2nd grade at Striplin Elementary in downtown Gadsden. It was hard for Jane to go anywhere in Gadsden without running into one of her former students. When this occurred, she always remembered their name and you could count on a long conversation catching up with them. Jane shaped the lives of many people.
Jane was very active in her church, First United Methodist of Gadsden where she taught Sunday School and played a major role in starting the Church’s “Ladle of Love” (Soup Kitchen) program. She was an active supporter of the Humane Society, and loved traveling with her husband as they participated in dog competitions all over the Southeast. Jane also enjoyed playing Mahjong with an active group of friends.
Jane was preceded in death by her brother Leonard Hartsook Jr, and her sister Nancy Roper. She is survived by her husband Charles (Butch) Herb Jr, her son Chuck Herb, his wife Lisa, and grandchildren Kiley, Kolby and Ali.
A Celebration of life Service will be held on May 18th, Thursday evening at 6:00 pm at First United Methodist Church of Gadsden. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who would like to memorialize Jane donate to the First United Methodist Church of Gadsden in her memory.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.collier-butler.com for the Herb family.
