Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Polly Rogers; his children: Janna Hicks and her spouse, Jeff Hicks; Jennifer “Sissy” Bishop and her spouse, Paul Bishop; Jason Rogers and his spouse, Kathryn Rogers; grandchildren: Andrew Hicks, Jake Rogers, Hannah Rogers, Will Hicks, Allie Rogers, Emma Rogers, and Samuel Bishop. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jerry was the unofficial mayor of Wall Street/Alabama City, since his drugstore - Jerry’s Pharmacy - sat on a corner of Wall Street for almost 50 years. He and Jason were partners in the Gun Shop of Gadsden, located only two doors down from the pharmacy. With his outgoing personality, he became a fixture in the Alabama City community - seeing needs, meeting needs, and supporting the various Little League teams in the area, as well as several ministries that gave back to the people of Gadsden.
For the last 10 years, Jerry was a member of Southside Baptist church. Prior to that, he was a member of Dwight Baptist Church in Alabama City for 35 years. He was compassionate about medical missions, serving in the field for more than a decade with the Honduras Baptist Dental Mission. Jerry also served on multiple committees within the City of Gadsden, serving several years on the Gadsden Water Board. The Etowah Baptist Association and the Etowah Baptist Mission Center were benefactors of both his service and generosity.
An avid hunter, Jerry loved hunting both in Alabama and in multiple states out west, whether it was deer, caribou, elk, or even wild boar. In addition, Jerry found fun - and frustration - in shooting, playing golf, watching Auburn football, and watching Atlanta Braves games. Since 1999, his greatest joys were in spending time with his grandchildren and traveling with Polly.
The hole left behind by Jerry’s passing is huge. He will be remembered for his smile, his laugh, his sense of humor, his generosity, and his love of Jesus. One of Jerry’s most impactful ministries was his emphasis on supporting orphans and widows, as well as caring for pastors. Jerry spent the last couple of decades studying the word of God and sharing the gospel with everyone around him. Above all else, it is his family’s desire for anyone reading this to know that Jesus loves you and gave His life for you. Because Jerry knew this, the moment he exited this earthly life, he met Jesus face-to-face and heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Keith Scott, Matt Mabrey, and Reese Harden. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy McGriff and Jerry Kitchen.
The family would also like to thank Dr. Sikander Zulqarnain of Riverview Pulmonology Associates for the excellent care in Jerry’s final days, as well as the staff of Jerry’s Pharmacy for bearing the brunt of sharing the news of his passing with his many customers.
A visitation for Jerry will be held Thursday, October 16, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Southside Baptist Church, 3975 AL-77, Gadsden, AL 35907, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM. A private burial will take place at Rainbow Memorial Gardens. Collier-Butler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Those who want to honor Jerry’s memory may either send flowers or make a donation to the Honduras Baptist Dental Mission (PO Box 1807 Collins, MS 39428).
