John served his country during the Korean War and was a life long member of Local Union 498 in Gadsden/Local 91. He was also a member of Ashville First Baptist Church. He took great pride in being one of Ashville’s first football players called the Ashville Green-Waves. He was an avid coon hunter and horse lover. He loved fishing and Alabama Football. As a dear friend and his nurse for 1 ½ years described him, he was old fashioned, country to the bone kind of man.
He was preceded in death by his parents Rogers (Pete) and Josephine Stewart, wife Betty Stewart, brothers Terry, Joe and Charles Stewart. John is survived by daughters Janet (Tony) Mostella, Kristie Smith (Randy Ramsaran), grandchildren Torey Smith (Laney Boman), India and Tanner Mostella, sisters in law Jane & Barbara Stewart, along with several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Thanks to Amedisys Hospice for the great care over the last year and a half, especially the care he received from Kasie Hill, Brittany Moses and David Floyd. Words can never express the gratitude we feel for so many people that have helped us along the way, especially Kim Wesson, Alice Williams, Chelle Mostella and Misty Pruitt.
Pallbearers: Larry McCullough, Samuel Williams, Norman Montgomery, Clay Cato, Terry Wise, Darrel Henderson, Ray Stevens, Rick Deweese. Honorary Pallbearers: Ken Davis, Phonies(Proc) Mostella, Rick Whisenant, Dick Woods & John Terry.
