Lance Boyd Koury, 64 passed away Sunday, March 24, at his home surrounded by his family. Lance battled Glioblastoma for just over a year. Visitation will be held from 11 to 1 on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at Collier-Butler Funeral Home in Gadsden. Service will follow.
Lance graduated Auburn University in 1982, with a degree in Aviation Management. He was commissioned into the US Navy's Aviation Officer School which he completed in 1985. Two years later, he completed US Navy Flight School. While in the navy, he completed Anti-Submarine training and Nuclear Weapons Training courses. After several years working in the private sector, he returned to military service with the US Army and the Alabama National Guard as an Aviation Maintenance Pilot and Test pilot. He was an outstanding pilot, committed to safety and excellence. Lance enjoyed his aviation career and working with the NTSB Investigations and the FAA.
Lance and Jane married in 1989 and settled in Gadsden where they raised their three sons. Lance taught his sons to love God, family, traveling, and Auburn as much as he did. He was an excellent tour guide on the many places he took his family. New York during Christmas was his favorite trip and one his family made often. He never met a museum he did not like. Lance made sure that his boys explored the Smithsonian and the MOMA many times.
Lance was a fabulous cook. He shared his passion for all things culinary with family, friends, and neighbors. No one made a better banana pudding. His sons carry on the tradition of being talented cooks themselves.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kathleen and Mitch Koury, and his oldest brother Mark Koury.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jane, sons Thomas Koury, Benjamin Koury, and Patrick Koury, as well as his brothers Eric Koury and Chris Koury. His family includes his precious pets Ellie and Olivia.
The family welcomes flowers or donations to Lance's favorite charity Rose Acre's Animal Rescue, 501 Simmons Lane, Attalla, AL 35954.
Special thanks to Dr. Layla Wren, Dr. Carl Nechtman, Hospice nurses Brittany and Kelly. The Weaver High School Class of 1978 has been a blessing to the family.
