Lester Roy Shipp, a resident of Regency Pointe, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2018, at the age of 100 after a life well-lived. His beloved caregiver Margie was at his side when he went to his heavenly home.
Lester was born in Martling, AL, son of Daniel and Frances Shipp and grew up with eight brothers and sisters in Crossville, AL. His family shared a lifelong love of gospel music. He attended college at Jacksonville State and later served in the U. S. Army.
Lester had a successfully career with the FAA in Atlanta GA and Fort Worth, TX, and was Chief, Air Traffic Controller at Atlanta Airport for over 20 years, where he developed many of the procedures used in high density air traffic control today.
His daughter Karen remembers fondly the 100th Birthday Party that they had with family and friends last year.
Lester was known for his kindness, wit, enjoyment of his job in air traffic, love of music and family.
Lester is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jim Weed, of Reston, VA, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Melba Shipp, and his grandson Bryan Weed.
Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July28, 2018 at Collier Butler Funeral Home, 824 Rainbow Drive
Gadsden, AL 35901. The Revs. Ken Casey and Sam Hayes will officiate.
