
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Collier-Butler Funeral Home. Dr. Eric Reaves and Rev. Kotoro Hamamatsu will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until the hour of the service. Burial will follow with military honors at Hughes-Moragne Cemetery.
Mr. Whorton was a man of strong values and deep faith. He was raised in First Presbyterian Church and later served as an Elder at Rainbow Presbyterian Church. He was also a longtime member of Harvestfield Church. He proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force for four years. Throughout his life, he dedicated many years to his work, including with the Etowah County Department of Education, Republic Steel Corporation, LTV Steel Company, AAA Plumbing Pottery, and Honda Enterprises.
He had a passion for life that showed in everything he did. He loved obedience training and showing dogs, enjoyed Alabama football, 4x4 wheeling, and spending time at dog shows. He was known for his kind heart, strong work ethic, and the love he had for his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Lee Wells Whorton; sisters, Sandra (John) Duncan and LuRae Morgan; brothers, Donnie (Debbie) Whorton, Joe (Kim) Whorton, and Harry Whorton; his chosen son, Rev. Kotoro (Jackie) Hamamatsu; chosen grandchildren, Keitaro, Kenta, Kyotaro, and Keina Hamamatsu; special exchange student, Rob Sas; and a special caregiver, Sandy Watson, who was “AS CLOSE AS FAMILY.” He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Wellesley Christian Whorton; his parents; his sister, Bettie Kay Beddingfield; and his brother, David Whorton.
The family would like to express special gratitude to those who cared for him and supported him throughout his life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Harvestfield Church or the Etowah Humane Society.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Brian Haskins, Jeff Molock, Hunter Carnes, Keith Reid, Lynn Packer, Bob Whorton, Perry Marker, and Matthew Reaves.
Honorary pallbearers include Jim Deale, David Pearson, Ricky Jenkins, Danny Patterson, Braxton Barnes, Ken Duke, Bill Painter, Bill Drummond, Michael Collins, and Jerome Thomas.
