Shirley spent most of her 85 years living in different places and experiencing different jobs. She was born in Trion, Georgia, and lived in Nashville, Tennessee, New York City, Los Angeles, Ca, Tacoma, Washington, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Southside, Alabama. I may have missed a few places. She co-wrote a country music song recorded by Lynn Anderson (Our House is Not a Home) that reached #18 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 1969. She so enjoyed the music scene in Nashville. She loved seeing musical theater in New York City. Shirley really loved owning and operating the Bijou movie theater in Tacoma, Washington and she worked in real estate in Arizona. She came home to Alabama to be close to family. She was ill the last few years and passed away at Coosa Valley Rehabilitation and Healthcare after fighting the good fight for two years. Shirley loved learning and was a fierce competitor when watching Jeopardy on tv.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents J.O. Mayo and Ruby Holcomb, her brothers James, Billy and Mitchell and her sister Myra Wiggonton. She is survived by three sisters-in-law, Cho (San Antonio, Texas), Linda (Piedmont, Alabama) and Fran (Albertville, Alabama), several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, even great-greats and several close friends.
Shirley loved her fur babies and fostered dogs when she could. If anyone wants to remember Shirley by donating to an animal rescue nonprofit, it would be a fitting memorial.
Shirley is interred at Rainbow Memorial Gardens, Attalla, Alabama.
