
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 28th, 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Rainbow City for Walter B. Majors, Jr., age 89, who died Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Burial to be in Rainbow Memorial Gardens. The Revs. Ken Casey and Ricky Smith will officiate. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services will direct. Mr. Majors has been a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rainbow City since 1954, serving in many leadership positions throughout the years. In 2006 he was honored with a "Life Member" award in United Methodist Men. He served his country in World War II, stationed in Hawaii and Japan. He was fortunate to participate in a Patriot Flight for World War II Veterans to Washington D.C. in May 2010. Walter was the owner of Majors Iron Company, Inc. since it's beginning in 1946, working until he retired in 2009. He was the 2nd mayor of Rainbow City, serving also on the city council, utilities board and planning commission. On September 10, 2006, Rainbow City proclaimed that day as "Walter Majors Day" and was presented the key to the city. He has been a lifetime member of the Rainbow City Lions Club serving the club in many offices, leading the club in mop, broom and nut sales. For his dedication and service, he was given the "Melvin Jones Fellow", the highest award in Lions Club International. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Merle Majors. He is survived by his daughters, Janie (Donny) Gray, Cathy Majors and Amy (Barry) Matson; grandchildren, Jeff (Jennifer) Gray, Tony (Nicole) Gray, David Matson and Rachel Matson; great grandchildren, MaraJade, Ashton, Jaron, Branson, Jonas and Isabella Gray. Pallbearers will be Mike Mitchell, Dennis Henderson, Randall Vickery, Alan McInturff, Lance Smith and Tommy Stanley. Special thanks to Dr. Dwight Harper and his loving church family. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Rainbow City, 3208 Rainbow Drive, Rainbow City, AL 35906. Mr. Majors will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday night at the funeral home.
