

Barbara Ann Nieman, a cherished member of the Gahanna community and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on June 9, 2024 at the age of 71 in Gahanna, Ohio. Born in Queens, New York, Barbara touched the lives of many with her warmth, generosity, and dedication to service.
Barbara's journey was marked by a passion for creativity and a commitment to making the world a more beautiful place. After graduating from Thomas Worthington High School, she pursued her passion for interior design, earning a degree from the University of Minnesota. It was during her tenure as an interior designer at Plummer Inc. that she crossed paths with the love of her life, Phil Nieman.
Throughout her life, Barbara exemplified the spirit of giving back to her community. As a member of the Christ Child Society, she devoted her time and energy to supporting those in need. Her faith was an integral part of her life, and she served as an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist at Saint Matthew's Church, touching the lives of many through her service.
Barbara's talents extended beyond her professional and volunteer endeavors. She found joy in gardening, crafts, sewing, and photography, finding beauty in the simple moments of life. Her love for the arts led her to volunteer at her children's school, where she enthusiastically supported events like the Shakespeare Experience.
Her passion for education and the arts was evident in her roles as a substitute teacher at DeSales High School, where she also volunteered with the marching band and theater department, and St. Matthew's Church, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of students and colleagues alike.
Barbara shared 42 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Phil, creating a life filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Barbara is survived by her children, Laura (Kevin) Salfen, Alison (Jeremy) Hepner, and her grandson, Wystan Salfen. She is also survived by her brothers, Robert (Shelley) Wanamaker, Donald (Debra) Wanamaker, James (Linda) Kricfalusi, Mark (Twila) Brand, Michael Kricfalusi, sisters Jackie Cahill, Tonya Kricfalusi, Kim (Craig) Gosney, and Janet (Tom) Shawhan, along with several beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Al and Helen Wanamaker, and Liane Brand. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made in Barbara's name to the Christ Child Society or the Cancer Society. The family would also like to extend their deepest gratitude to the healthcare teams at OSU and Central Ohio Hospice for their compassionate care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Mother of Sorrow Chapel in St. Joseph Cemetery, 6440 S. High Street, Lockbourne, OH, 43127 with Reverend Bede Kotlinski presiding. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held by the family at a later date.
