Outside of her professional career, Hazel was a lady of many joys. She loved spending time with her son and grandchildren. She cherished time with her siblings in the hills and hollows of Marrowbone Creek in West Virginia, where she grew up. She also found joy in outdoor gardening, thrifting for antiques, canning vegetables and watching Ohio State Buckeyes. She enjoyed many long nights that often turned into early mornings at the Casino.
Hazel will always be remembered for the warmth of her kitchen and the comfort of her delicious home-cooked meals. Whether it was a family favorite passed down through generations or something new she made with love, every dish carried a piece of her heart. Her meals brought everyone together, nourished more than just our bodies, but created memories and recipes that will live on for years to come. Hazel was known to say, “If you leave here hungry, it’s your own damn fault”.
Hazel will be remembered for her kindness, blunt responses, tough love, delicious meals and the warmth she brought to all who knew and loved her. Her memory and legacy will live on in the heart and memory of all those that loved her.
While our hearts on earth are broken, we find comfort in knowing that Heaven erupted in celebration as Hazel was reunited with those she loved and lost; the ones whose absence she carried with quiet strength.
