Connie passed away peacefully with family at her side, at the age 91. She was a wonderful mother who was always there when we needed her. A well-loved member of the community of Mt Olive, she had many friends, having lived there over 70 years. She accepted Christ as a teenager and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Mount Olive, where she taught Sunday School, GA’s (Girls in Action) and Vacation Bible School. She also was involved with the Women’s Missionary Union in leadership roles, went on countless home mission trips as well as taught English as a second language and reading skills. She was a quiet, determined lady who always had a positive attitude and a giving heart. She loved to write cards of encouragement and delivered 100’s of squash casseroles and lemon ice box pies just to spread a little joy. She was an excellent cook, seamstress, house keeper, gardener, friend and neighbor.
She left a wonderful example of dignity and grace for her children:
Gloria (Pete) and children Scott & Amanda
Michael (Patricia) and children Brad, Brandon & Jennifer
Larry (Kellie) and children Paige & Jacob
She had a special love for children and took much delight in her 15 great grandchildren. She is survived by her brother Richard Whitten, sister Joyce Crane and sister in law Brenda Whitten.
Connie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Odus E. Tate, her parents Rex and Ruby Whitten, step mother Della Whitten, three brothers William Rex Whitten, Redford M. Whitten & Gene Whitten.
She will be laid to rest by her children and siblings, in a private service on Friday. Entombment at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel Mausoleum.
Friends and family are invited to a remembrance service Saturday January 27 at 11 am, at First Baptist Church Mt Olive.
We are thankful for everyone who helped us lovingly care for our mother, friends, family, church members and neighbors. Covenant Place made her final years fun and comfortable, they loved her like we did. We also wish to acknowledge the compassionate care of Hope Hospice and Dr Gilbert Douglas.
