John was born in Birmingham, Alabama on May 10, 1958 to Kathleen and Royce Gurley. He served in the United States Marines, and worked in Civil Service afterwards. He was an avid Alabama Football fan.
He is survived by his mother, Kathleen Gurley; and wife, Susan Gurley; and sons, Johnathan, Sean and Derek. He is also survived by numerous nephews, grandchildren and aunts.
He was preceded in death by his father, Royce; beloved sister, Micki Murphree; uncles and grandparents.
A celebration of life will be held at Oakwood Memorial Gardens on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 2:00 pm. Graveside services officiated by Pastor Bill Davidson. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Grand Old Gospel House in Gardendale.
