

Johnny Wayne Blount, 72, passed away on June 9, 2024. Born on June 4, 1952 to Artie Blount and Willard Blount. Wayne grew up in Birmingham. He obtained a GED and joined the military (Army). After he was discharged from the military, he worked days to provide for his family and went to college at night. He obtained a Bachelor degree in electrical engineering. He served nine years in the military service and was a Vietnam Veteran. He was an MP assigned to guard a General during the Vietnam Conflict. After being discharged from the military he served as a police officer for a number of years. He worked at Caraway Hospital in maintenance using his electrical skills. Later, his degree allowed him to get a job as Facility Director to the Birmingham Museum of Art where he retired.
He married Sue Vinson with whom he had two children, Donald Wayne Blount and Johnny Allen Blount. After that marriage, he married Janice Edmondson with whom he raised the boys in a loving and productive environment, until her death.
He later married Martha “Leigh” White and together they blended two different families into one united family. Wayne and Leigh promoted love and acceptance of everyone involved. There have been many wonderful family gatherings that will always be remembered. Wayne was a great mentor, counselor, and provider. He will forever remain in our hearts.
Wayne is preceded in death by his mother, Artie Blount, his father, Willard Blount, his brother, Charles Blount , his sister, Judy Morgan, and his brother-in-law, Todd Thursby.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Martha Leigh Blount, his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Patsy Blount, his sister and brother-in-law, Martha Jane and Don Shaw, his sister and his brother-in-law, Bonnie and Jack Atkins, his sister-in-law, Linda Thursby, and his sister-in-law, Gay Blount wife of Charles Blount.
He leaves behind two sons, Donald Wayne Blount, Johnny Allen Blount, three stepdaughters, Jennifer Wells (Allen), Carrie White, Dana Johnson, grandchildren, John Blount, Tyler Blount (Madeline), Madison Blount, Brady Wells, Owen Wells, Austin Turner, Cody Johnson, Mia Johnson, great-grandchildren, Silus Turner, Sidalee Turner and Brayson Hendon. He leaves behind a host of special nieces, nephews and cousins.
A follower of Christ, Wayne held membership at Gardendale First Baptist Church. He was baptized there along with his granddaughter, Madison Blount, on October 7, 2012. His legacy was sharing his faith as a born again Christian to family and friends. He was a teacher along with his wife Leigh for a Jimmie Hale Mission sponsored group called Discovery Club. This group went in and held bible study for after school children at Fultondale Elementary School. The children absolutely loved him. We will always remember him as a kind, generous and loving man.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel in Magnolia Hall, visitation will be at 11:00 AM with service following at 12:00 PM. George Weeks from Senior Adult Ministries at Gardendale First Baptist Church will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations, in memory of Johnny Wayne Blount, to be made to the American Cancer Society, cancer.org/dignitymemorial.
