

John Thomas Montgomery John Montgomery of Georgetown, died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 70, on August 24, 2009, while vacationing in Colorado. John was born in Georgetown on September 4, 1938, to Frank and Bethel Montgomery. His parents and also his grandparents, John & Lizzie Montgomery and W.T. & Birdie Fletcher, predeceased him. He is survived by his children Cheryl House (Matt Reiland), John Montgomery, Jr. (Leah Ann), and step-children Jackie, Jamie &Jason Montgomery/White; five grandchildren Nicky, Dean, Chelsea, Jordan & Cooper; and two great grandchildren Taylor & Makayla; sisters Frankie Ramey and Selinda (Dwain Miller); brothers Rodney (Jane Montgomery) and Robert Montgomery. One uncle and one aunt, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends also survive him. Family was very important to John- he loved us all as we love him and he will be greatly missed. A 1957 graduate of Georgetown High School, as a senior John was captain of the Eagles football team and president of the FFA. He graduated from Southwestern University with a BS in Education while serving in the Army Reserves. He was the Director of the Iowa Association of Mental Health for several years and retired after 25 years with the American Cancer Society as the Sr. Vice President of Fund Raising. When he returned to Georgetown in 1998, he served on the Georgetown Area Community Foundation and The Caring Place Board of Directors. After volunteering several times in the schools on the Hopi Indian Reservation in Arizona, John, Robert, Frankie and Selinda established a non-profit organization in 2004, The Friends of Hopi Foundation, to support educational efforts benefiting the Hopi schools. He traveled to Alaska and Australia with the Lost Dutchmen Mining Association prospecting for gold and gems. After taking singing lessons from Mrs. Hausenfluke in high school, he fancied himself as a country western singer. We will miss his singing at all the family weddings. Memorials can be made in John’s name to the American Cancer Society or The Friends of Hopi Foundation. A memorial service will be held at Gabriels Funeral Chapel, 393 North IH-35, Georgetown, TX. on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 2:00 pm.
