Max was born in Walnut, Kansas on July 25, 1940 to Mr. Max Smith, Sr. and Mrs. Ella Smith. Eventually, The Smiths made the move to Pittsburg, Kansas where he attended much of his schooling. However, one of his proudest achievements was graduating from OCS after joining the National Guard in the spring of ’58. Max’s hard work, dedication and work ethic allowed him the honor of graduating OCS as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1963. He served in the Army for nearly three decades and retired as a Major.
Just at the very beginning of Max’s military career, he married the love his life and high school sweetheart, Ms. Kay Elaine Powell, in Miami, Oklahoma on September 18, 1958. Over the span of their 65 years of marriage, they were blessed with three children and had the opportunity of living in various places.
Toward the end of his career, Max retired from the military in 2003 as a Major but very much continued his success, owning Calvert Concrete of Jarrell, Texas and Marina and Restaurant at Lake Waco. Any chance he got, though, Max could be seen with friends, family and other loved ones, and all the more better if it was on a softball field or fishing boat.
Max Smith is preceded in death by Max Smith, Sr. and Ella M. Reese Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Smith; his two sons, Bill A. (Shari) Smith and Bob R. (Sandy) Smith; his daughter, Becky (Billy) Walker; his grandchildren, Joey, Nicki, Jason and Cody, as well as a multitude of great-grandchildren, family and friends who will miss him greatly.
The family wishes to extend their sincerest thanks to Brookdale, with Gina, Emily, David and Tomasa especially being a great resource for Max. Not to mention Suncrest Hospice, where Julie and Dawn helped tremendously throughout the process. In lieu of flowers, Max’s family would like donations to be made to the American Diabetes Association. Max’s beloved wife, Kay, has battled the illness for many, many years and any amount donated would be much appreciated by both Max and the rest of The Smith Family.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2023 from 5-7pm at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel. The graveside service will take place Friday, November
17, 2023 at 1pm at the IOOF Cemetery. Donna Miller and Nicki Shepherd will be the celebrants for the graveside service for Mr. Max Smith.
