Ed Geraghty’s warmth, intelligence, and steadfast character left an impression on everyone he met, whether it was lifelong friends, business colleagues, or new acquaintances drawn by his welcoming spirit. Ed’s legacy is not only measured by his professional achievements or the devotion he showed to family, but also by the countless lives he touched with his wisdom and generosity. His memory will live on in the stories shared during family gatherings, the laughter echoing on the golf course, and the lessons he imparted to future generations.
Ed was born December 5th, 1937, to Patrick J. and Marion Geraghty in New York City. Ed was dedicated family man, accomplished businessman, friend, and generous leader to all.
Ed spent his formative years growing up in Billings, Montana where he had many friends and enjoyed all the outdoor activities and freedom that the Big Sky state had to offer. Ed was class president, football captain, and homecoming king at Billings Central Catholic High School where he graduated in 1956. Ed was awarded a full scholarship to Dartmouth University where he played football and was a member of Chi Phi fraternity. After excelling at Dartmouth for two years, he moved on to fulfill his military obligation with the US Army. Ed served with the Combat Engineers at Fort Ord, California. After completing his military service at Fort Ord, Ed returned to Billings, ready to embark on the next chapter of his life with Jacquelin Elmore. Ed and Jacque were married on January 29th, 1961. Nine months later, their first son, Patrick, was born.
In 1962, Ed and Jacque moved to Denver, Colorado where Ed obtained a position in real estate development at the Colorado National Bank, while earning his MBA at night school at the University of Denver. During their time in Denver, Ed and Jacque embraced the vibrant Estes Street neighborhood and families around them, often attending gatherings
that brought neighbors and friends together in celebration. Ed’s second son, Timothy, was born in 1963. Ed and Jacque built a loving home together, and made many lifetime friends such as the Deans, Spencer's, Jones, and McChesney's while raising their boys with the same values of kindness and determination that defined Ed's life.
Ed's career flourished in Denver, where his sharp mind and strong work ethic quickly earned him recognition in the real estate banking industry. Throughout the years, he embraced new opportunities and challenges. In 1971 Ed was recruited by Union Bank and then relocated his family to Lafayette, California in the San Francisco Bay Area. While living in Lafayette, the family took up snow skiing, prompting the purchase of a ski condominium at South Lake Tahoe NV. For 19 years Lake Tahoe was the center of all family related activities shared with friends and family and their great partners John and Jean McKeen. Skiing was not the only sport as Ed developed to be an expert blackjack player, usually winning big and covering the cost of the vacation. Eds' career continued to grow as he later held top positions with Crocker and Wells Fargo Bank. Ed’s sons Pat and Tim matriculated to California State University Chico, both earning degrees in 1985 and 1987. At about that same time while working at UC Berkeley it was learned that Ed wife Jacque was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
In 1987, Home Savings of America came calling and appointed Ed Sr. VP of US income Property Lending. Ed relocated the family to Southern California where he purchased his dream home in LaVerne, California. A bank merger offered Ed a “Golden Parachute” in 1991. Ed and Jacque took a year off to work on their golf games and traveled to Ireland, England and Scotland with their great friends George and Donna Dean. After a year off, Wells Fargo came calling again where he worked as Sr. VP in the problem loan unit until his retirement in 2003. Ed's final 38 years were spent in Southern California where they reconnected with friends from Montana, notably the Hilario’s, Overland's, Handley's and Van Denburgh's, made new friends thru the Newcomers' club, played golf, and enjoyed social activities at the Sierra LaVerne Country Club. Ed and Jackie loved to travel and experienced Italy, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, and Ireland to name a few. Upon retirement Ed’s focus gracefully shifted to the care and comfort of his wife Jacque who passed away in 2006. Ed’s heart was forever broken. In retirement Ed passed the time, fishing annually for trout Montana or marlin in Cabo San Lucas, golfing in China, and competing with the High Brow Golf Club. Ed never mastered golf but loved the commandries and excelled on the 19th hole. Ed spent much of his final years with his sons, enjoying family BarBQ's, pool parties and playing the stock market. Retirement had some challenges as Ed suffered from neuropathy, survived prostate cancer, and had two hip replacement surgeries.
Ed was proud of his family and life accomplishments. He traveled the world, had three holes in one, and kissed the Blarney Stone, in his last moments he raised his arms, clinched his fist, and said, “No Regrets”. Ed is survived by his sons Patrick and Timothy, their partners Hollie Mc Ewen and Yuko Geraghty, three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Ed’s spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him, reminding us to live fully and cherish every moment.
