Scott Richard Root passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on April 19, 2025, just shy of his 57th birthday. A beloved son, father, brother, uncle, and educator, Scott dedicated over 30 years of his life to serving students as an Educational Specialist in the Covina-Valley and Azusa Unified School Districts. His deep commitment to education and to the success of his students he worked with has left a lasting legacy in the communities he served.
Scott earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of La Verne, where he played on the baseball team all four years. He was a proud member of the 1986 team that went undefeated in league play with an impressive 18-0 record, a highlight he remembered fondly throughout his life. He later went on to earn his master’s degree in education, with a focus in special education, from Azusa Pacific University, further deepening his dedication to helping students achieve their fullest potential.
In addition to his work in education, Scott was passionate about athletics and mentoring young people through sports. He served as a baseball coach at both Covina High School and Azusa High School, inspiring student-athletes both on and off the field. He also spent many years as a respected high school and college football referee, a role he deeply enjoyed. Scott found great fulfillment not only in officiating games but also in mentoring and supporting upcoming referees, helping to shape the next generation of officials with his knowledge, encouragement, and steady leadership.
Above all, Scott was deeply proud of his son Turner and all of Turner’s accomplishments, including his success in tennis, his achievements in choir, and his graduation from the University of California, San Diego. Scott loved coaching Turner in Little League and treasured the time they spent together both on and off the field.
Scott was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Carolyn Root. He is survived by his loving son Turner Root, his father Tad Root, and his brothers Steven (Hanna) Root and Jeff (Tammy) Root. He also leaves behind his cherished nieces Brianna (Jason), Krista (Thomas), Jessica, Mary, Vanessa, Virginia (Justin), nephew/godson Travis, as well as his great-nieces and great-nephews.
Scott’s warmth, humor, and kindness touched everyone who knew him. His love for his family, his students, and his community will be remembered always.
A viewing will be held on Friday, May 16th, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Oakdale Mortuary in Glendora. A memorial service and Celebration of Life will follow on Saturday, May 17th, at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Covina.
