David A. “Dusty” Rodes Jr, was born on August 24th 1953 in Seattle and peacefully crossed over the final bar in Ferry County, Washington on February 11th, 2026. For those that didn’t know Dusty, you certainly had heard stories of this legendary man. He was a beloved grandfather, father, brother, merchant mariner and to many, best friend. He was married to DeAnn Easton in his earlier years and found great joy in being a father to their children Ashleigh and Dustin. As a sailor Dusty traveled up and down the west coast in his early career with Foss and Crowley, finishing with 25 years of service with the Washington State Ferries, where he found his work family. Dusty loved to entertain all with his signature jazzy piano tunes. From late nights playing piano, telling sea stories, hunkering down with the engine crew watch, or finally enjoying some peace and quiet in his retirement years in the country, Dusty will greatly be missed by all. His pets were so loved and a great comfort to him. He was survived by his black labrador Gus and orange tabby Sweetie. Additionally survived by daughter Ashleigh Rodes and partner Joel Anderson and grandchildren Brady and Isabel, son Dustin Rodes and wife Ashley Van Vrancken and grandsons Bridger, Baker, and Bishop of Louisiana, sister Patricia Schneider and husband Charles of Arizona, cousin Brad Horrigan and wife Jan of South Carolina, nieces Kyla and Chelsea and their families, nieces Kellie Gillespie (husband Joe), Kathleen Haaversen, and nephew Kris Haaversen. In his later years, taking on the role of father to Andrew (wife Elaine) and Sara Hyres (partner Chris) and their families, Ashleigh and Dustin’s siblings.
A celebration of life will be held in late July in the Western Washington area. Dusty will be laid to rest at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery next to his parents David Rodes Sr. and Kathryn W. Rodes. We hope he’ll be jamming with Jimmy Hendrix, accompanying him on the piano.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Forget Me Not Shelter in Republic, Washington or your local animal shelter in his name.
