He retired from the U.S. Navy after 24 years of service and then spent 17 years at Plus Mark of Greeneville before retiring from there.
Survivors include two step daughters and their spouses: Amy Pierce Koch and Glenn Koch and Beverly Pierce Freshour and John Freshour; four step grandchildren: Hannah Koch and Meredith, Ellie, and Audrey Freshour; and his special dog: Kobi Taylor.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel Dean Rayder Cates, and his parents, James and Pauline Thomas Cates.
A special thanks is extended to his personal caregiver, Zach Howard, the staff of Appalachian Christian Village, and the staff of Welmont Hospice House.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 14 in the Chapel at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Shumate officiating.
Interment will be in Andrew Johnson National Cemetery at a later date.
