

Mr. Mathes was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in South Central.
He was born in Washington County and is the son of the late Charles Mathes and Ruth Painter.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law: Wade and Trina Mathes of Jonesborough; three grandchildren: C.J. and Nick Mathes and Justin Higgins; brothers and sisters-in-law: Walter and Karen Painter of the South Central Community and Willis and Carolyn Shanks of Chuckey; brother: Johnny Painter of South Central; sisters and brother-in-law: Axie and Bob Nelson and Marie and Kenneth Nelson of Limestone, Elizabeth “Sissy’ Thompson of Chuckey, Virginia Fellers of South Central, and Linnia Anne Painter of Limestone; brother-in-law: Gene Valentine of Kingsport; sister-in-law: Sharon Penley of South Central Community; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Linda Jo Mathes; and a brother: Warren Allen Painter.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home preceding the funeral service at 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Rev. John Buchanan will officiate.
Interment will follow at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Free Will Baptist Cemetery. It is requested that family and friends meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home to go in procession to the committal service.
His pallbearers will be Paul Painter, James Duncan, Bradley Thompson, Cleve Painter, C.J. Mathes, and Richard Shelton.
Rev. Rance Edwards and Dr. Elliot Smith will serve as honorary pallbearers.
