He was 84 years old.
Orville Ward Swarner Jr., M.D., who cared for Greene county children for over thirty years, passed away October 10, 2023. He was a member of the Polk family of North Carolina and Tennessee to which James Knox Polk, 11th President of the United States, belonged. A pediatrician with advanced training in neonatology, he felt fortunate to be among the first physicians to use rapidly advancing medical knowledge to save the lives of high risk newborns who previously would not have survived.
Dr. Swarner and his wife Julia have three children: Stephanie Jean, Scott Jefferson, and Stephen James and four grandchildren: Jessica, Orion, Luna and Alexander who were the light of his life.
There will be a private family gathering at a later date.
