

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Greeneville, where he has served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher and was proud to say that he was a member of the Koinonia Sunday School Class.
He was a graduate of McDonald High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1962-1966.
He began work at the Greeneville Sun in February of 1967 and completed his last column in December of 2013.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years: Cassie Marilda Moore Hurley; son and daughter-in-law: Dr. Jonas and Julia Hurley; two grandsons: Henry Emerson Hurley and Walter Irving Hurley of Springfield, Kentucky; sisters and brother-in-law: Geraldine Culberson of Mohawk and Jane and Archie Payne of Medina, Ohio; brother and sister-in-law: Sam and Betty Hurley of Mohawk; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Merrill and Maxine Harrison of Mohawk, David and Marthena Myers of Raleigh, North Carolina; special aunt: Mrs. Dorothy Walker of Rogersville, Tennessee; two aunts: Mrs. Glada Riley of Mohawk and Mrs. Louise Riley of Whitesburg; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Hurley and was preceded in death by a brother, John Hurley, and a brother-in-law, George Culberson.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 5-8pm Thursday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 2pm Friday, January 24, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Greeneville. The body will remain at the funeral home until time to be taken to the church to lie in state for one hour preceding the funeral service. Rev. Dr. David Green, Rev. Jim Best, Rev. Roger Cutshall, Dr. Howard Eugene (Johnny) Shipley will officiate.
Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The Greene County Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy Military Honors Team will conduct a military graveside service
Pallbearers will be Mike Roberts, Gene Gaby, Ron Smith, Tommy Haun, John M. Jones Jr., Wayne Phillips, Dr. James Ray McKinney, Erich Ottem, Jonathan Ottem, Dax Westerman, Frank Riley, and Tom Solomon.
Honorary pallbearers will be his church family (Koinonia Sunday School Class), Mohawk-McDonald friends and classmates, newspaper co-workers, neighbors, and all whose lives have been touched by his work at the Greeneville Sun – you are all honorary pallbearers.
