He retired from Hurd Lock.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Briggs served in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an avid woodcarver.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: James and Karen Wilhoit-Landry of Greeneville and Samuel and Sara Kinert-Landry of Foot Hills Ranch, California; one grandson: James Devin Landry of Greeneville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Pearson and Elminer Shelton Briggs of Greeneville; a sister: Hazel Tessitore of Schnectady, New York; two brothers and a sister-in-law: O'Dell Briggs of Alabama and Haulk and Dorothy Briggs of Greeneville.
There will be no formal visitation.
The Greene County Honor Guard and the Tennessee National Guard will conduct a military graveside service at 10am Friday at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to meet at 9:45am Friday at the cemetery for the graveside service.
