
Ruth Cotter, age 79, of Greeneville, passed away peacefully at her home on March 5, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Ruth was born in Norton, MA and spent her early childhood years in Chicago, IL. As an adult, she resided in Massachusetts, South Carolina and Tennessee. Ruth was of the Methodist faith.
Prior to retiring, she was employed at Belcher Malleable Iron Works in Easton, MA. Ruth enjoyed many hobbies such as reading, quilting, gardening, mahjong, bingo and card games, along with numerous other interests. She especially enjoyed time spent with family and friends.
She is survived by her children: Cheryl (Robert) Fischer of FL, Lorraine (Terry) Gardiner of TN, Steven (Mary) Benvie of MA and Susan (John) Lienard of MA; her beloved stepchildren: Marsha Cotter of MA, Robert (Diane) Cotter of MA, Sandra (Robert) Kelleher of MA, Michael (Nancy) Cotter of SC, William (Bridget) Cotter of MA and Scott (Rachel) Cotter of MS. She also leaves behind 28 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
She was the daughter of the late Walter and Randine Hanson and is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cotter; her brother, Robert Hanson of OH; her sister, Mabel Stevenson of FL and her former husband, Charles Benvie of MA.
Ruth’s family wishes to thank all of the wonderful, compassionate doctors, nurses and caregivers for the love and support shown to her throughout her lengthy illness. The care she received during her difficult journey meant a lot to both Ruth and to her family.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew her and will remain in our hearts forever.
Ruth’s wishes were that she be cremated followed by a memorial service to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718 or to the charity of your choice.
