Born in Hamilton, Ontario on November 5, 1921, Annabel was the daughter of William A. Kennedy and Dorcas Kennedy. A dedicated life-long learner, she graduated from the University of Toronto in Home Economics in 1944, earned her Faculty of Education degree in 1964 and completed a Masters of Education (O.I.S.E.) in 1977. She was actively involved in education most of her life as a secondary school teacher and later as an adult educator, with a keen interest in gerontology.
Annabel was the beloved wife of the late Henry J. Sissons, and loving mother to Bill, John, Judy (Brian), Susan (James) and James, as well as a cherished stepmother to Brenda (Rob), Mary (Chris), David (Heather) and Samena (David). She was predeceased by her husband, Henry; her children, Susan Mason, John Holdsworth, and James Holdsworth; her stepdaughter Samena Jeffery; her daughter-in-law, Heather Sissons; her son-in-law James Mason; her brother Charles A. Kennedy and sister-in-law, Frances S. Kennedy.
Together, Henry and Annabel shared a deep love for travel and adventure - journeying across Canada in their camper van and flying abroad to explore a wide variety of destinations. She was always at peace in the outdoors, hiking stick in hand, or gardening at the family farm in Orono. Annabel gave generously of her time to her community through extensive volunteer work, holding leadership roles in numerous organizations. She served as President of the Ontario Gerontology Association and the University College Alumni Association and as Vice President of the University of Toronto Alumni Association, Durham Region Community Care Association, Clarington Older Adult Association and Memorial Hospital of Bowmanville.
Annabel leaves behind a legacy of warmth, strength, resilience, and a sharp sense of humour that lives on in her beloved family. She will be fondly remembered by her 21 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Annabel’s grandchildren were the light of her life. Known affectionately to them as Mamma, Annabel, and Nanabel, she treasured every moment spent with them - creating cherished memories at the family farm in Orono, on hiking trips in New Hampshire, canoe trips in Algonquin park, and during the many visits across Canada to see them all. A fearless leader and the heart of her family, she will be deeply missed.
The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Village of Arbour Trails for their kind and compassionate care and support.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday July 19, 2025, from 11:30-4:00pm at The Village of Arbour Trails in the Town Hall and Chapel, 32 Bayberry Dr, Guelph. Luncheon will be served.
In memory of Annabel, and as expressions of sympathy, donations to the University of Guelph Arboretum or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
