Berniece was born on September 19, 1928, to Stanley Victor Patterson and Bertha (Hignett) Patterson in Smiths Falls, Ontario. She spent much of her youth in Fenwick but moved around Canada during the war years as her father's postings changed. As a young woman, she went to Normal School in Hamilton and became a teacher.
She was married to George Alsop and they had three children: Jarrett, Rory, and Robin. When the children were young, Berniece was a supply teacher and later opened a small craft shop where she sold local crafts as well as her own work. Throughout her life her interest in art never waned, and she was a talented painter, potter, and fibre artist.
Berniece is lovingly remembered by her children Jarrett (Marlene) and Robin, her grandchildren David Pester (Crystal Charette), Melanie Pester (Steven Haist), Lachlan Sheldrick, and Morag Sheldrick, her great-granddaughter Penelope Pester, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Lenora, her husband George, her son Rory and her great-grandson Connor Pester.
The family wants to thank the staff at The Elliott Community for all their compassion, care, and skill during Berniece's time there. She was treated with love, and loved them right back.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date at Fenwick United Church.
Arrangements entrusted to Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home - Hart Chapel. Condolences can be made on Berneice's memorial page at www.gilbertmacintyreandson-hart.com
