I was born in Italy on January 6, 1943 - a place that never left my heart. With fond memories of lying under the olive trees, catching fresh fish, and of course, getting into trouble. I came to Canada when I was 15, where I built a life rooted in hard work, love, and meaningful relationships. Still, I always found my way back home whenever I could - walking familiar streets, embracing family, and remembering where it all began. And when I wasn’t there, you could often find me by the ocean somewhere down south, soaking in the sun with my toes in the sand.
For decades, I worked for Canadian Cab, where I wasn’t just a driver - I was a friend, a listener, and sometimes even a bright spot in someone’s day. To those who rode with me over the years, thank you for your kindness, your trust, and your company. I carried your stories with me.
I also had a deep love for old classic cars - spending time at car shows and enjoying summer drives with the top down on my convertible, feeling the warm air on the open road.
But if you really knew me, you knew my heart belonged to the horses. Racing wasn’t just a pastime - it was a passion that filled me with excitement, purpose, and joy. I was proud to have owned and raced many horses over the years. The track was a place where I felt alive and where my dreams ran as fast as the horses themselves.
I was predeceased by my beloved parents, Michele Martelli and Carmela Perre, and my stepmother, Elisabetta Materno. I have now reunited with many of my dear siblings and their spouses: Grace (Frank Romano), Maria (Rosario Romano), Leonardo, Giuseppe, and Rosa (Antonio Guzzo), all of whom I hold close in my heart, along with my half-siblings Domenico, Gino, and Concettina. To my beloved sister Giulia (the late Natale Leonardo Calarco), sisters-in-law Gina and Donata, as well as my half-sister Tetina, your love remains with me always.
I leave behind my loving wife, Candy, whose unwavering support, strength, and care meant more to me than words could ever fully express. She stood beside me with patience, love, and a generous heart, and I am forever grateful for the life we shared.
To my children, especially my beautiful daughters Sabrina (Ricardo) and Michelle - you are my greatest pride and deepest love. You are my heart. Watching you both grow and become who you are today has been my life’s greatest privilege. And to my cherished grandchildren, Gabriella and Matteo - you brought me a kind of joy that words could never fully capture. You are my legacy, my light, and my endless smile.
I was also blessed with a large extended family, and I leave behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins, each of whom brought joy and love into my life over the years.
To my dear friends here, thank you for the laughter, the conversations, and the simple moments we shared - especially over espresso and a good game of cards. Those times meant more to me than you may ever know.
I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the incredible teams who cared for me with such compassion and dignity - everyone at Grand River Regional Cancer Centre, Hospice Wellington, and the staff at Guelph General Hospital. Special thanks to the Home and Community Care Support Services palliative team, especially Margaret. Your kindness and dedication will never be forgotten.
Don’t think of this as a goodbye. Think of the laughter we shared, the miles I drove, the races I watched, the sun on my face, and the love I carried for all of you. That’s where I’ll always be.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation at Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Hart Chapel on April 12th, 2026 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. A service and reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hospice Wellington or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Come as you are, share a story, smile, and maybe even laugh a little - for that’s exactly how I would want to be remembered.
Until we meet again.
