Born on August 16th, 1930, in Cuijk (Holland), Opa grew up during a time that shaped his resilience and values. From an early age, he learned the importance of hard work, perseverance, and family—principles that guided him through his work and his role as a provider. He was deeply proud of the life he built and the family he nurtured.
Throughout his life, Opa was fortunate to experience two loving marriages. He was a devoted husband of 33 years to his first late wife, Susan, with whom he built the foundation of his family. He was a loving father to Paul (Marjorie), Jack (Michele), Diane (late husband Rick), Ron (Pam), and Sue (Steve).
Later, he shared 31 beautiful years of marriage with Iona, who survives him. This union blessed him with his stepchildren – Colleen (Don), Maureen (Fraser), Charleen (Les), the late Stephen (Mary-Ann), and Kate (Bill).
He was a cherished Opa to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his loving family, including his brothers Chris (Coby) and Henk (Marja) and his sisters Ria (Frans) and Trees (Will), who all carry forward his stories, values, and enduring legacy. His actions exemplified his commitment to his family through the lessons he passed on and the many traditions he preserved.
Opa’s ability to find joy in life’s simple moments was a true gift. Whether at the family cottage in Lakefield, the cottage at Caissie Cape, the legendary Christmas Eve parties at Chilcot, or the many family gatherings in Guelph, there are countless precious memories his family will always hold dear. He had a way of making people feel safe and valued, and his presence will be deeply missed.
Though our hearts are heavy, we are comforted knowing he passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of family. The family is most appreciative of those who cared for him in his final months – his daughters Diane and Sue, his stepdaughters Kate and Charleen, and his private nurse Janica. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Princess Margaret Hospital.
Forever loved. Forever remembered.
