It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nora Athoe. She passed peacefully on March 31, 2026, surrounded by family at Hospice Wellington.
Nora was the beloved wife of the late Barry Athoe for almost 60 years, the much-loved mother of Margie Charland and mother-in-law to Daniel. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Jessica (Darryn) and Kevin.
Survived by her brother Bob McVittie (Judy) and nephews Brandon (Catherine), Ryan, Jason (Martha), brother-in-law James Athoe (Carol), Lisa (Kelly) Shoniker and Gary (Cheryl) Athoe.
Born to parents Nora and Roy McVittie on July 7, 1936, Nora lived her early years in Barrie. The family moved some years later to Guelph (where Nora and Barry returned in retirement to be close to family).
After graduating from G.C.V.I., Nora headed to Queen’s University where she met lifelong friends who were her constant. In recent years, as visits became challenging, they stayed in touch by phone and monthly zooms. “Make new friends, but keep the old…”
Nora was a teacher and enjoyed a long and rewarding career at Bedford Park Public School in Toronto. At Bedford, Nora met wonderful friends who together, proved teachers know how to have fun too.
While working full time, caring for and giving unconditional support to her family, Nora went back to university to earn her Master’s degree, studying late into evenings, writing papers longhand at the dining table.
Nora and Barry enjoyed spending time with family, traveling with friends, Thanksgivings in Haliburton, wintering in Arizona and summers at the cottage in Southampton, loving the beautiful sunsets and listening to the piper on Friday nights.
Resting at the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon St., Guelph, where the family will receive their friends on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 from 3-5 p.m.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Parkinson’s Canada, Diabetes Canada or to Hospice Wellington would be appreciated by the family. Donation cards are available at the funeral home or online at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com
