Una Eleanor Ballantine - 1941 - 2024 Una was never more at peace or more fulfilled than when she was serving others, whether that was through her church, her vocation as a nurse or her devotion to her family.
Una Eleanor Ballantine, 82 years of age, of Guelph, Ontario died peacefully late in the evening at Lissard House in Cambridge, on Monday, January 01st, with family by her side.
Una was born in Kingston, Jamaica and moved to London, England with her mother Irene (nee Kirven) Young after her father Thomas Young passed away. Her stepfather was Charles Lewis. She completed her Registered Nursing education in England, after which she moved to Scotland to achieve her midwifery certification. In 1970 Una moved to Guelph, Ontario, Canada with her husband Clayton and two sons where she worked at St. Mary's and the Guelph, General Hospitals as well as in community care for over 40 years.
Una reminisced often about how hard times were when she was growing up in Jamaica. This was the fuel for her hard work and devotion to both her career and her family. Despite working full-time for most of her life in a demanding career, she always made time for her family - being caring, compassionate and passionate. The family always had dinner waiting and an attentive wife/mother at the ready.
Una was married to Clayton Alister Ballantine in England in 1964. He predeceased her on August, 9th, 1997 at the age of 56.
She leaves behind her two sons - Peter and David, her daughter-in-law Kathryn and four granddaughters - Olivia, Megan, Caroline and Avery. She was great-grandmother to Theodore, Evelyn, and Isaac.
She also leaves behind her brother Gerry and sister Angela and their respective spouses Donna and Marcelino.
Una was an active member of Parkview Church, devoting her time and energy to the prayer team and other church causes. She nurtured and valued her many friendships and acquaintances from her days as a nurse and her participation in the church and she felt blessed and thankful for the support and care she got from her Parkview and Foxwood families in her latter years.
Una will always be remembered for her willingness to give of herself and the way that she put her faith and trust in God. We’ll always imagine hearing her say “thank the lord” one more time. We couldn’t have asked for a better mother and grandma and will miss Una every day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
