Alison was an amazing person who had a big impact on my future career, before she even knew me.  I started my internship at the Hospital for Sick Children the same day that Allison started as the Director of Food and Nutrition Services.  Before she started working, Allison had to select two interns for the summer program.  Years later I asked her why she had selected my application.  At the time I was working for Agriculture Canada and Lois Hurst was the Director of the Food Advisory Division.  Lois was one of my references and she and Allison had gone to school together.  Allison felt that a recommendation from Lois was good enough for her.   A few years later I bumped into Allison at the post office and she hired me to work at Sick Kids  and that is where our friendship began. We often kept in touch by phone and in person when my son went to Dal.  The last time I saw her she was still mentoring interns.  She was very practical and methodical in her approach to all things and I learned a lot from her.  She contributed to so many dietetic careers over the years and will be greatly missed.

I first met Allison when I was working for Versa Services at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. Our association continued for many years when her career took her to Versa as well. She was the consummate professional and a brilliant mentor to young dietitians.  I learned so much from her and I respected her tremendously. I’m so sorry to learn of her passing. The world has lost a true leader.

I am a voice out of Allison’s past. We were dietetic colleagues  at the Halifax Infirmary and in our dietetic associations.  I had great respect for her abilities as Food Service Director and was privileged to call her friend.  She was a supportive mentor and wonderful role model to many.  Her family however was always her prime concern.

She was the first married student to be accepted into  a dietetic internship here because it was believed then that married women could not manage both family life and an internship.  She put that theory to rest!

My sympathy to her family members.  It is never easy when our loved ones must leave us.  Know that others share your sadness.

Allison was always truly interested in what was happening in your work and professional life. I first met her while a student working with Versa for the summer. She was encouraging! Later when our paths crossed again in the Canadian Association of Foodservice Professionals, she was a champion for students and professionals alike. Always gracious, a phenominal listener, and a fierce supporter of the industry. May she rest now in peace.

Allison shaped the careers of many dietitians and food service professionals. Always presenting a professional image and articulating the value of the dietetics profession, Allison was a true leader for dietitians in Canada. Whether directly or through others she mentored, she has left a lasting impression on many. She will be missed.

I’m so sorry to hear about your mom.  I always enjoyed your mom when we would chat at the bank.  My daughter is a dietitian as well and knew your mom and attended dinners with her.  I just lost my mom in law in December to  Alzheimer’s. It’s such a sad illness.   I hope your good  memories will help at this sad time.

What a very sad day to learn of Allison’s passing. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends. I met Allison at The Hospital for Sick Children and we immediately connected. I worked with her both at Sick Kids and for several years at Versa. She was the consummate professional - and inspired so many of us to work hard and give our all to the profession as she always did. Some comments from other colleagues (plastic fork test - the importance of personal presentation) bring back wonderful memories. Allison was a colleague, and mentor and a friend. I am grateful to have known her. I trust the memories of Allison and her commitment to family, community and her profession will be the legacy she deserves.  

Allison Miner was a passionate, dedicated professional. There is no doubt she influenced the career of many as mentor and lifelong friend. Looking over the many decades I have known Allison, her career covered it all: mentor, teacher, director, manager and leader. Later, she chose to share her vast knowledge and experience as a consultant. Family was extremely important to her as she would proudly recap visits and events. Yet in all, community was not forgotten as she always had an ongoing project for the IWK, crocheting bonnets and blankets for premature babies.  

On a lighter note at this sad time, Allison not only was a professional role model but she set the bar high for professional appearance. As young interns and dietitians, we would always pay close attention to our appearance in the work place and at meetings and conferences. A true “model” in so many aspects.

Allison always made time for me as I began my career at Versa - always offering amazing advice and showing me what 'thinking out of the box' meant. It was Allison Miner that helped me fall in love with Health Care Foodservices. We tasted many foods at Marsan together as new products were being developed ..... "if it can't be cut with a plastic fork then it won't cut it on a patient menu'.... so many fond memories of a true professional who passionately went about her craft every day with confidence. My deepest condolences to Allison's family.

I worked with Allison at the old H.I. as her receptionist when she was Director of Food Services.  One year for Christmas she gave me a leather case with Scissors and letter opener.  Still treasure it today.  My thoughts go out to the family.

I met Allison when I emigrated to Canada from the UK 29 years ago. It was such a pleasure to know her. She gave me the opportunity to start my life in this wonderful country. 

I first met Allison when she taught me two courses at the Mount.  She was a remarkable teacher who combined theory with her real life experiences in such a way that made learning from her a great experience.  She was a born mentor to many, me included, providing career guidance, common sense advice, and just being a stellar role model.  Our paths crossed many times in the small world of Food Services, notably in her dedication to the profession with the Canadian Food Services Executives Association, later the Canadian Association of Foodservice Professionals where she continued to mentor and encourage students and young professionals.  I enjoyed her teaching and her friendship and will miss her. 

HI ...I knew your mother very well as a professional friend...Allison was a leader in dietetics and an innovator...I always looked forward to catching up with her at professional events...as a fellow Maritimer working in Ontario. Wonderful to learn about her extensive family...my sympathies  to all of you for your loss. I am sure she was an inspiration in your lives as she was to so many.
