It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of beloved husband, father and grandfather Andy Mitrakos, age 80. He passed away peacefully March 12th, 2014 at the VG Hospital, Halifax. He was born in Anavriti, Greece and emigrated to Canada in the early 1950’s arriving at Pier 21. He settled in New Glasgow, where he would meet his future Dutch bride of 57 years, Margaretha. After moving to Halifax, Andy owned and operated various businesses in the North End of Halifax for over 40 years. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family, but in the little spare time he did have, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and playing cards with the guys. In retirement, he especially enjoyed spoiling his four grandkids, who were his greatest joy. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Constandina. He is survived by his wife, Margaretha (Baetsen); daughters, Connie, Maria (Keith) Moir, and Christina Baker; sons, George and Andrew; grandchildren, Justin, Lauren, Alexandra, and Haley; sisters, Dina Moundroukas, Christine (Louis), Helen (John), and Demitria (Sebastian). A service for family and close friends will take place Monday, March 17th at 1 pm followed by a reception in J A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax (455-0531). Interment to take place at St. John’s Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Andy’s longtime family physician Dr. Archibald, and all the nurses, doctors, and staff at the VG Hospital, especially those on 5B and 3A ICU. Your amazing care and compassion made this most difficult time as bearable as humanly possible. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
