

BURNS, Arlene Elizabeth Ellen (DeGrace) – 77, of Halifax, died in her home on January 1, 2011 surrounded by family. Born in Bathurst, NB, she was the daughter of the late William and Ethel (Melanson) DeGrace. Family was her passion. Arlene attended Mount St. Vincent University where she studied home economics. She had a rewarding career as a teacher of home ec. and family studies in Bathurst, Halifax and Dartmouth. She was a devoted mother to her three sons; and she travelled extensively in Europe and North America with her young family. Arlene was an excellent seamstress - generously offering her talent to sew for family members making many curtains, scarves, dresses, etc.; her cooking and baking was legendary within the family. She initiated a Burns family tradition, Boxing Day Brunch, which brought the family together for more than 40 years. Arlene enjoyed good health throughout her adult life, as a result of her energetic lifestyle. She was active in her Church and the Catholic Women’s League, and enjoyed playing bridge and skating with her many friends in Halifax and Dartmouth. She will long be remembered for her kindness and generosity. Arlene is survived by her three sons, Sean and wife Jennifer, granddaughter Clementine, Menlo Park, California, Bryan, Halifax, Daniel, New York, NY; sisters, Joan (Sister of Charity), Quebec City, Marvel (Vincent Colton), Bathurst, and Bernie Drover, Burlington; brother, Kevin (Phyllis), Toronto. She was predeceased by her loving husband Terry, and sister, Carmel (John McArdle). Visitation will be at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax on Tuesday January 4, from 3-5PM and 7-9PM. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 5 at 10:30AM at Saint Benedict Church, 45 Radcliffe Dr., Halifax. Internment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
