Barb is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Samuel Robert ‘Bob’; daughters Lynn (Keith) Carroll, Bedford and Janice Spence, Nine Mile River; son Grant (Kelly). Boutilier's Point; and granddaughter Katlyn Spence who she adored and loved dearly. Also, her beloved cat ‘Frosty’ who guarded her bedroom faithfully every night while still at home.
Mom was a resident of Maplestone Enhanced Care for almost three years. She lost her battle to Alzheimer’s on the evening of April 9th, 2013 after a beautiful day filled with music, laughter and much love. She was known at Maplestone for her dancing skills, sense of humor, beautiful smile and her very expressive eyes.
Mom came to Halifax to attend Grace Maternity School of Nursing and graduated in April 1955. Her nursing career took her to Dawson Memorial Hospital, Bridgewater in September 1955, Grace Maternity Hospital in June 1956 and The Children’s Hospital in October 1957.
Mom was an awesome skater and she loved her hockey. Being a player herself in the early 50’s with West Kent School in Charlottetown – her opposition would refer to her as Sharp Shooting Hamm. She attended all of her children’s hockey games with her cow bell a ringing!
She has been a member of Saint John’s United Church for over 50 years and a member of the UCW’s Mary Todd Unit for over 40 years. She became known for her Santa skills and never missed the opportunity to play Santa no matter what time of year.

Mom was loving, selfless, compassionate, funny and above all, courageous.
