Jan 2 - 4:46 AM - Halifax Chronicle HeraldIT TAKES good people of many varied skills to operate a successful newspaper and media company — some of whom readers see in action and many of whom they don’t. In the latter category, we at The Chronicle Herald have long been the beneficiaries of the considerable talents of Bob Hemming, the company’s director and financial adviser, who passed away on Boxing Day in Halifax. As his former accounting partner, Mike Casey, said this week, Bob Hemming was someone who "gave very good advice and people sought him out for that advice." They did so because of his sound judgment, his thoroughness and his impeccable logic as a business adviser. But they did so, as well, because Bob always went out of his way to be helpful, whether it was helping new directors learn the ropes, helping a Herald journalist navigate the reefs of tax law for a story or editorial, or helping a staff member get the right advice to sort out a problem. Even from his hospital bed, he was still helping people, Mr. Casey says. "That’s the kind of person that he was."He was also the sort of person who didn’t seek out the limelight. When he got involved as a volunteer — for Bonny Lea Farm, the Metro Food Bank, the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre, the Scotia Festival of Music or the provincial Liberal party — it was because he genuinely cared about the work of the organization. In short, Bob was one of those modest, trusted, stand-up people who make a great contribution behind the scenes, much appreciated by those he helped but not captured on the public radar. That suited him just fine. But his colleagues at this newspaper will sorely miss his ready helpfulness and sound advice.( [email protected])
