Carl Sutherland passed away peacefully on February 4, 2024 after a long illness. He was predeceased by his dear father Donald, and is survived by his loving mother Georgina (Jo), his brother Alan (Judi), and his cherished nieces, Catie and Sarah (Quinten). He will be greatly missed by his many cousins - Evelyn, Sherry and Ellen (Steven), Bobby(Lori), Paul, Jo-Anne(Barry), Brian, Stephen(Sarah), Leighanne (Graham) and their families, as well as many friends.
Carl was very athletic when he was young, and enjoyed swimming and playing hockey. As he grew older, Carl took up golfing, curling and bowling for many years, and always enjoyed a good game of horseshoes. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Acadia University and then worked for the Department of Highways until his retirement. Carl absolutely loved being at the family cottage on the North Shore and it was his favorite place in the world. He was an avid gardener who could make anything grow (particularly hostas!) and a superb cook, renowned for planning the menu for the annual family feast. The salmon and halibut that he cooked to perfection on the barbeque is still talked about to this day. Carl was a man of many talents and interests, and was able to make a “McGiver” solution to fix anything and everything. His design and construction of an outdoor shower at the cottage was unique, extremely functional and appreciated by all. This was done years ago, at a time when no one had ever thought of such a thing outside to wash off the sand from the beach.
Carl enjoyed his various cars and in particular, his prized red truck. He loved the storage that it provided, and the bright red colour meant that he could always find it in a parking lot. In his retirement, Carl also decided to teach himself how to do stained glass, which clearly showed his creative side. He made beautiful pieces of stained glass for friends and family, culminating in designing and creating two windows for St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Birch Cove. Carl was above all, a person who cherished his family and friends and will be missed by all that knew him.
