It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Carol Ann Janc. She left this world on Saturday, April 15th, at home and surrounded by her loved ones. Her kindness and warm-hearted nature will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Carol was born on February 8, 1948, in Halifax to the late Eric and Cora (Purcell) Melvin. She grew up in Purcell’s Cove and attended Halifax West. After completing school, she embarked on a solo trip to Europe, following her heart and exploring the continent. Soon after returning home, Carol started working at MSI, and it was on a blind date that she met her love, Romano Janc, who soon became her husband. Together, they built a home in Brookside and raised their two children, Craig and Carmen. Later on, when the kids were older, Carol went back to work at Dalhousie Library, where she could continue to nurture her penchant for neatness, organization, and love for learning. She was also a proud grandparent to five grandchildren and one soon-to-be great-grandchild.
Throughout her life, Carol was known for her kindness and non-judgmental nature, which she offered to everyone and anyone. Those who knew Carol remembered her fully attentive presence while listening to a concern or while spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed knitting, quilting, reading, and passing time with sudokus and crosswords (right up to her last few weeks). Carol loved walking and traveling with Romano, taking the time to explore the Adriatic coast of Croatia and the solitude of Montserrat in the West Indies. Carol’s family and friends will share fond memories of her culinary creations, including favorites like tea biscuits, cream puffs, amazing birthday cakes, and the best lasagna around.
Carol is predeceased by her husband, Romano Janc, and parents, Eric and Cora Melvin. She is survived by her children, Craig (Shannon) and Carmen (Brian), five grandchildren, Emily (Kyle) and Abigail Purdy, Brittany Paquette (Adam), Ilyana, and Roman Janc, brother Jim Melvin, nephew Vincent Melvin, and other extended family members and friends. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Carol’s final wish was to donate her body to Dalhousie University’s Department of Medical Neuroscience to aid in the learning of others. We would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to Nurse Claire and the many friends and family who reached out to offer support during the last few months.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 29th, from 2-4 pm at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. In lieu of flowers, we encourage everyone to be kind and follow your heart, as Carol would have wanted.
