
FLEMING, Charles Joseph – 79, of Dartmouth, passed away on May 16, 2011 at the Oceanview Manor surrounded by family. Born in Burin, NFLD, he was the son of the late Charles Fleming and Catherine Penney.
Charlie was employed at the Halifax Shipyard as a spray painter for 32 years, and was an honorary member of the IUMSWC Local 1. He was a coach of the Halifax Shipyard Hockey Team in the 1960’s and helped to establish a minor baseball team in the North end of Halifax in 1967. During retirement, he volunteered to set up for special events at the Dartmouth Sportsplex. Charlie enjoyed playing sports and spending his time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by daughters Linda (Thomas) Blackmore, Dartmouth, Dianne Scanlan, New Glasgow; sons Michael and Billy, Pictou Co., stepchildren James and Eric Boutilier of B.C. and Susan, Shirley, Kathy, Leita, of Halifax; sisiters Rita Harris, Halifax; brothers James Fleming (Millie) of Halifax; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Charlie was predeceased by wife Barbara (Lawson); sister Madeline; brothers Gordon, Leo, Clem, Jack, Billy and Raymond; step-children David and Joan.
Arrangements are entrusted to J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax (902) 455-0531. Service will be held at St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church, North St., Thursday, May 19th at 10:30 a.m., Rev. Roberto Donato officiating. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oceanview Manor Society.
