It is with immense sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, son, and brother, Stewart Morrison, on January 24th, 2026, at the age of 61. Stewart passed peacefully at his home in Timberlea, NS, surrounded by his family after a hard-fought, eight-month battle with metastatic gastroesophageal cancer.
Born in Sydney Mines and raised in Little Bras d’Or, Cape Breton, he was the son of Carol (née McCarron) Morrison and the late Charlie Morrison. In his early years, Stewart enjoyed spending summers at the Morrison family homestead in Boisdale with his siblings and cousins. Stewart enjoyed all sports and was a fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, the New England Patriots, and was a self-described long-suffering fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Growing up, Stewart enjoyed playing hockey but his favourite sport of all was golf. He was introduced to the game as a young teen by his father and for several years was a member of Seaview Golf and Country Club in North Sydney. His love and skill for the game grew through the years and in 1982 he won their Junior Club Championship. During the 1980s he was a strong competitor in numerous tournaments throughout the Maritimes, winning several titles. In 1989, Stewart recorded a hole-in-one on Seaview’s 9th hole, a proud moment on his golf resumé.
After graduating from Memorial High School in 1982, Stewart attended St. F.X. University, where many lifelong friendships were made. Following university, he worked for Via Rail Canada and Brinks before meeting Donna in 1990. Stewart then moved to Calgary in March 1991, and Donna joined him in September of the same year. While in Calgary, he worked for Brinks and Pepsi Co. In the years following their wedding in Cape Breton, Donna and Stewart welcomed their two children Riley and Jocelyn. In 2001, Stewart and his family returned to Nova Scotia and settled in Timberlea where they have lived for 25 years.
For the past 20 years, as the owner/operator of BLT Limousine, Stewart provided airport service in the Halifax area, as well as scenic tours for cruise ship passengers. Stewart always had an interest in history and enjoyed sharing his knowledge and the beauty of our province with people from around the world. Stewart loved travelling with his family, especially to Disney World, where they shared many fond memories. He was an outstanding tour guide at home and abroad.
Stewart cared deeply about his community. He served for 20 years on the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys Conference, including a couple of years as Vice-President. He also volunteered his time as a driver for the Marguerite Centre and sponsored multiple children through Compassion Canada and Chalice Canada. Stewart is remembered as being very kind-hearted, instilling in his children the value and importance of giving back.
In addition to his mother, Stewart is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 30 years, Donna (née Blackwood), and son Riley of Timberlea, and daughter Jocelyn (Isaac Nauss) of Upper Tantallon. He is also survived by his siblings Curtis (Noelle) Morrison, Marguerite (Arthur) LeBlanc, Roddy Morrison, and Susan (Shawn) Fraser. He will be dearly missed by his mother-in-law Muriel Blackwood, sisters-in-law Karen Blackwood (Stephen McDonald) and Judy (Colman) Munro. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews Jordan (Emma), Erica (Josh and their daughter Maddy), Cohen (Josée), Kathleen (Mike), Ryan (Charlotte), Jamie, Kyle, Kara, and Faith. He is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
In addition to his father, he is predeceased by his grandparents Laura and Roderick Morrison, Margaret McCarron Baxter and George McCarron Sr., his father-in-law Donnie Blackwood, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family would like to thank Dr. Stephanie Snow, Dr. Stefan Allen, Meagen Farmer, RN, the NS Health Oncology and Palliative Care teams, Continuing Care, VON, and CBI Home Health for providing care to Stewart, allowing him to remain at home in his final days. They would also like to thank their close family and friends who visited frequently and provided love and support throughout his journey.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IWK Hematology and Oncology Patient and Family Support Fund, or the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys Conference.
