We are saddened to share the passing of a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Charles “Charlie” Robert O’Handley, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, surrounded by family and so, so much love.
Born on May 25, 1949, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Charlie grew up with a passion for hockey, golf, and a strong sense of family and community.
Born to Allen Michael (Cal) O’Handley and Catherine (MacIntyre) O’Handley,
Charlie is loved by his wife of 52 years Jean, his children Jenn (Gary Sweet), Ryan (Tatum) and Amy (Jon Caines) and his grandchildren Hannah, Maelle, Sophie, Trent, Jakub, Spencer and Emily. He is predeceased by his parents, Cal and Kay O’Handley, and his sister Karen.
Charlie’s hockey talents carried him to play in Fredericton for the junior Red Wings, and at the university level for Little X and Dalhousie Tigers. He then dedicated years to education, leading students, and inspiring teachers as their principal with his passion for learning. A natural mentor, he coached countless young athletes with patience, encouragement, and a belief in teamwork that extended far beyond the rink or ball field. As a dedicated Scout leader, he helped shape young people with the same steady guidance, humor, and integrity he brought to every part of his life. He loved his community and gave back in countless ways, always ready to lend a hand or offer encouragement.
He loved the thrill of a good hockey game, the calm of a sunny round of golf, and the laughter of a gathering of family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and connection - may his memory continue to inspire the same warmth and compassion he shared so freely throughout his life.
A huge thank you to the staff on 7A Palliative Care, VG site for their comfort and care during a difficult time.
A funeral service for Charlie will be held on Monday January 5, 2026 in St. Luke's United Church, 5374 St Margarets Bay Rd, Upper Tantallon at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Luke’s United Church or etransfer to [email protected] with ‘In Memory of Charlie’ noted.
