

SHANKEL, Charles M. - Lieutenant-Colonel (Ret.) – 91, passed away peacefully on July 21st, 2010 at QEII, Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was the only son of the late Owen and Katherine Shankel of Liverpool, NS. Meredith took great joy in being a husband, father and grandfather.
Meredith served in the Second World War with the Princess Louise Fusiliers in the 5th Canadian Infantry. He served in Italy where he was wounded, after which time he escorted troupes, prisoners-of-war, war brides, and wounded soldiers between Canada and England. Over all, Meredith made 26 round trips across the Atlantic.
He had a long career with the Royal Bank of Canada, beginning in Liverpool at age 16. He retired from the Royal Bank after 42 years. He then worked for several financial firms afterwards, until his final retirement in his early 70’s.
In his early years, Meredith was a Queen Scout with the Boy Scouts of Canada. He was also a long-standing member of Ashburn Golf Club, where he also served on the board of directors. Meredith had memberships at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, and the Waegwoltic Club. Meredith was an avid traveler and bridge player.
Meredith is survived by his wife Jean, of 62 years: children Kathy (Jim), Peter (MaryJane), grandchildren, Kristi (Brian), Meredith (Paul), Chelsea, Sam and Josh.
Visitation will be held at Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., on Sunday, July 25th between 2-4 pm. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 am on Monday July 26th at St. Agnes Church.
