

On January 31st, 2015, peacefully in her 98th year, Demetra “Tulla” Demetre, beloved wife of the late James Demetre, dear mother of Bertha, Katherine, and Nicholette and loving yiaya to Joanna, James, Jana, Devon, and Nicholas, great grandmother to Spiro, Katerina, and Sophia, has passed.
Born in Anavriti, Greece on September 14th, 1917, the fourth child of a family of eight children of Ekaterina and George Protonentis. Tulla immigrated to Canada in 1950 to marry James Demetre of Springhill, N.S.
Tulla led a full and happy life in Springhill raising her family and working in the family business, The Springhill Candy Kitchen, alongside her husband Jimmy, and dear Martha Apostolakos, Chrisoula and Dino Vlahos.
A private person, compassionate and philanthropic, Tulla was a pillar of strength, love, and dedication to her family and to others.
She is survived by her three children, Bertha (George Mendrinos,) London, ON, Katherine (Richard Bezanson) Halifax, NS, Nicolette (John Compton- Smith) Vancouver, BC, and a brother, Mr. James Protonentis (Athena) of Brooklyn, NY. Tulla is also survived by her very special and cherished friend and niece Chrisoula Vlahos and her family. She had many nieces, nephews, and cousins in New York and Canada, too many to mention, but still very dear in her heart.
Thank you to Dr. Sommers, the nurses, and staff on 2C at Northwood Nursing Home for their kindness and devotion to our mother during her stay. A very special thank you to Ms. Debra Bradley, Tulla’s personal care companion. Debra cared for her and prayed with her daily. Together they established a beautiful and Christian fellowship that, as a family, we will always cherish.
Resting at J.A. Snow funeral home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, evening visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 4th, 2015 from 6-9pm.
Funeral service will be held at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church at 38 Purcell’s Cove Road, Halifax on Thursday, February 5th, 2015 at 11am. Father Peter Maropoulos will be officiating.
