

At the age of 86, after a long and courageous battle with illness Derek passed away on September 11th at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. Derek was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. Predeceased by his parents Molly and Bevil Piers of Halifax; his stepmother Ruth Piers; and his sister Linda Piers Dixon. Survived by his wife of 60 years, Pearl, son Steven (Lisa), daughter Dawn (Chuck) MacNeil, grandsons Kyle and Ryan MacNeil, and granddaughter Sydney MacNeil, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Derek had a 32 year career in sales and marketing with Olands/Labatt Breweries. Always sports minded, he excelled at tennis and was a ranked player in his teens in Canada and into his 40s in Nova Scotia. He enjoyed golf, A member of Ashburn Golf Club and Northumberland Links in Pugwash, he achieved six holes-in-one. Derek also enjoyed fall hunting, fine food and the camaraderie at Kalikamp with his hunting buddies for over 50 yrs.
Derek enjoyed his many friends and cherished every time they spent together, but his favorite times were with Pearl and the family. Derek met Pearl by chance when he knocked on the wrong door on Pepperell St over 61 years ago and instantly fell in love.
In retirement, he took up skiing and he and Pearl spent many winters skiing in Wentworth with friends, the late Mike and Heidi Byrne. After hanging up the skis, it was winters spent in Bonita Springs, Florida which included more golf and tennis.
They traveled extensively, especially to Hong Kong where they welcomed their three grandchildren into the world, to England, Australia, Jamaica, and Barbados, as well as a cruise to Alaska.
A full life well lived, and he enjoyed it immensely. We miss him already and will love him forever.

Remains entrusted to J.A. Snows Funeral. A visitation will take place on Wednesday September 20, 2023 from 2-5pm and celebration of life will be held Thursday September 21, 2023 at 2pm all in J A Snow Funeral home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax.
