Dorothy "Bernadette" Henderson

The family of Dorothy “Bernadette” Henderson of Halifax age 98 are saddened to announce her passing in Northwood long term care on January 14, 2026 due to complications of Covid-19. Born in Halifax July 8, 1927 she was a daughter of the late Edward and Dorothy (McLeod) McLaughlin. She was the beloved wife of the late Henry H. (Kye) Henderson. She was also predeceased by sisters Paula Lee (Doug) and Monica Nordfjeld; half-sisters Carole Jones and Patricia Trimmer.

She is survived by daughters Paula Poirier (Al), Parksville BC and Nora Henderson (Daniel Maillet), Dartmouth NS; grandchildren Jennifer Clarkson (Cain) of Fernie BC, Carolyn Russell (Patrick) of Victoria BC, Patrick-Ryan Poirier of Fernie BC, and Hannah Maillet-Strickland (Jeramy), Lower Sackville NS; 4 great-grandchildren Evan and Kye Clarkson, Claire Russell all of BC and Silas Strickland, Lower Sackville; half- sister Christine Pace, Quebec.

Bernadette grew up and attended schools in Parrsboro and Amherst. After graduation from Amherst Regional High School she moved to Halifax with her sisters Paula and Monica and worked for the Chronicle Herald until she met and married Kye in 1947. She was widowed in 1989. She was a summer resident of PEI for many years enjoying the family cottage that Kye built for their retirement well into her 80’s. She had made her home at Parkland Clayton Park - Bradford Hall for the past 13 years where she had the companionship of her sister and best friend Monica until Monica’s passing in 2023. After a lengthy hospital stay, she had just recently moved to Northwood long-term care.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1725 Oxford Street, Halifax, on January 24th at 1:00 PM. Reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will take place in the spring in St. Bridget’s Cemetery, Parrsboro NS.
