Doug (Douglas Harold) Spidell, 88, Halifax, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on July 11, 2015. He was surrounded by his family. His 'baby doll', Joan (née Settle) Spidell, wife, partner and love held his hand as she did through 64 years of marriage. Known as dad, granddad, great granddad, brother, uncle and friend, Doug is deeply loved and respected for his kind and gentle ways and his wonderful sense of humour.
Remembering him with love are his daughter Jo-Anne (Spidell) O'Brien, husband Kenneth, Seaforth; their children Kenneth and Heidi O'Brien and son Tate; Beth and Adam McLean and daughter Ariel; Katie and Jonathan and children Austin, Logan, Molly, and Nathan and Chloe O'Brien, all of Halifax; Dougie Spidell and his wife Georgina (Benoit), Fredericton; their children Sara and husband Matt Chase, Houston, Texas; Jesse and wife Melissa and daughter Juliana, Alberta, and Douglas (Dougie) Harold, Alberta; and Danny Spidell and his wife Heather, son Matthew and his girlfriend Lindsay and daughter Sarah, Halifax.
Doug worked for the Department of Defence and HMC Dockyard. He loved hockey and played for the Halifax Shipyard Limited in 1945. He was recognized for his volunteer work during WWII and was called to service the day the war ended. He spent many hours in local rinks watching his big brother Jack play and went on to coach and cheer for his sons. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and shared many a story of the biggest and the best. A true family man, Doug and Joan enjoyed weekends with their children at their cottage in Noel and later at 'the farm' in Maitland. Their home in Fairview was filled with love and laughter and Doug was known to proudly capture many special family moments on their video camera.
Doug enjoyed and served his Lord Jesus Christ, and gathered with the Christians at the Halifax Gospel Hall. He is survived by his sister Shirley and husband Ronnie, Ontario: sister Marion, Halifax; and brother Maurice, Los Angeles, California. He was predeceased by his brothers Wilbert, Jack, Bobby, and sisters Winnie, Dot, Margaret and Ellen. Special thanks to his nursing home families at Maplestone and Ivy Meadows for their care and concern.
