Doug was born on January 4, 1944, the eldest son of the late Frederick Ralph and Marion Francis (Townsend) Oxner of Halifax.
Doug worked for many years in the dry-cleaning business in order to build a life with his loving wife Eileen Oxner, who predeceased him in December 2018. Together, they raised a family of seven, building a home filled with love and laughter.
Doug is survived by sons Glen (Stacey) Oxner, Doug (Marlene) Oxner, Johnny (April) Oxner, Louita (Scott MacIntosh) Butler, Rachelle (Dwayne) Loppie, Peter (Katherine) Oxner and Chad (JaeHyun Roh) Oxner; sister Sandra (Yvone) Bouffard and brother Darrell (Donna) Oxner. He was the proud grandfather of Joseph, Brianna, Johnathan, Brandon, Chloe, Jeremy, Taylor, Ashleigh and Cameron; nephews, Dwayne, David and Robert, niece Tina; and his good buddies Roddy Doucette and Billy Young.
Doug loved listening to Seaside FM, watching family movies, and old westerns, especially those featuring the Duke – John Wayne. But more than anything, he loved spending time with his family. He was a man of few words, but his family knew they were loved deeply. His “watch your driving” was his way of saying I love you.
A special thanks to his son Peter (Petey), who was Doug’s primary caregiver in recent years as his health deteriorated. Doug had a very supportive family who all provided assistance; however, Peter was definitely his “go to guy”. Doug was eternally grateful for the support Peter provided, allowing him to remain at home throughout his illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Doug’s name to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia.
The family will receive friends at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive in Halifax on Sunday, September 13 between 6-8pm.
