Ellen Blanche (Egan) Talwar, 69, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2025, in Halifax. Born on September 22, 1956, in Halifax, she was the cherished daughter of the late James John Egan and Rita Blanche (Ternan) Egan.
A proud Haligonian, Ellen completed her schooling at the Convent of the Sacred Heart. She grew up as an active member of Saint Teresa’s Parish, alongside her family, and her devout Christian faith remained a guiding force throughout her life. She later raised her own family within the parish community of Saint Benedict’s (formerly Our Lady of Perpetual Help), where she was deeply loved and respected.
Ellen shared 37 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Karan Talwar. Together, they built a warm and loving home and raised two sons, Nathan Talwar and Colin Talwar, who were the pride and joy of her life. She is also survived by a wide circle of extended family and friends, each of whom brought immense joy to her life—and to whom her presence was equally invaluable.
Ellen pursued her education with passion and dedication, earning a BA in History from Saint Mary’s University, a Bachelor of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University, and a Master of Library Science from Dalhousie University. Professionally, she poured her heart into her work in the public school system as a librarian and substitute teacher, where her kindness, intelligence, and love of learning left a lasting impression on students and colleagues alike.
Creative, meticulous, and brimming with style, Ellen had lifelong passions for fashion, decorating, and travel—pursuits that beautifully reflected her vibrant spirit. Although many encouraged her to pursue interior design professionally, she reserved her talent for the joy of those around her. From her first apartment in Winnipeg to her cherished home on Donaldson Avenue in Halifax, every space she touched radiated elegance and warmth. Guests were consistently struck by her attention to detail and innate ability to make a house feel both elevated and welcoming.
Known for her sharp wit, delightful sense of humour, and signature one-liners, Ellen had a rare gift for making others laugh and feel at ease. Despite the high standards she set for herself and her surroundings, she was defined even more by her unconditional love. Ellen had a special way of making anyone she encountered feel seen, valued, and cared for. Even when hurt, she always found it within her heart to overlook others’ imperfections and forgive injustices. She made people feel comfortable, included, and deeply cared for, offering compassion freely and consistently.
Ellen faced her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease with extraordinary strength and grace. Even as the illness progressed, her perfectionism, humour, and loving nature continued to shine through. Her resilience inspired all who walked alongside her through her journey.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Northwood 8 Centre for the exceptional care and kindness they provided. Ellen formed meaningful bonds with many of her caregivers, and the family knows her passing was felt deeply by those who supported her with such devotion.
