Glen was the daughter of Elsie and James Macdonald of Stellerton, NS, and was predeceased by her sister Helen (Howe). She was the beloved wife of Arthur Gordon Brown (D. Jan. 7, 2014) for 70 years. Glen's greatest pleasure in life was her family. She cherished her husband, the love of her life, and four daughters, and embraced her daughters’ husbands as her own sons. She was deeply proud of her daughters’ and grandchildren’s achievements.
She will be forever missed by her surviving daughters, Cheryl (John Hendriks) of Toronto, ON; Susan (Barry Deathe) of London, ON; Judith (Chris Evans) of Rothesay, NB; grandchildren Katherine Maddox and James (Kristan) Weir; Leah and Jon-Kristopher Hendriks; Ashley (Geoff), and Linden (Glenn) Deathe; Meredith (Sabelo), Cameron and Alexander Evans; great-grandchildren Liam and Olivia Maddox; sisters-in-law Dorothy Arkelian and Mabel Rogers; life-long friends, Marion and Charles Baxter and Margaret Reynolds; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her step-grandchildren and their families. Glen was sadly predeceased by her daughter, Karen Brown, and son-in-law Peter Weir in 2007.
Glen moved from Stellerton to Halifax in 1938 to attend NS Business College, and then worked at the naval dockyard where she first met Art. For years she gave administrative support to Art's business and "worked like the wind" with great accuracy and professionalism. Glen took pleasure in her home in Clayton Park and admired Art's work creating their beautiful garden sanctuary. In raising their daughters, Glen stressed the importance of independence, education, and personal and social responsibility. She was an attentive and gracious hostess, loved family gatherings around the dining-room table, mid-afternoon visits for tea, and garden parties. Glen had a dry wit and loved to laugh, which belied her quiet demeanour. Her gently-delivered pragmatic wisdom gave guidance to her family. She was intellectually curious, an avid reader, and always kept well-informed of current events.
She had an affinity for music, the arts, travel, fashion and all things beautiful. She had great interest in new trends and developments in the world, and always maintained great optimism for the future. As she faced and recovered from losses and health challenges in her later years, she always persevered and continued to find joy in life. Her remarkable strength and determination was an inspiration to us all. Her warmth and appreciation of her caregivers and fellow residents at Parkland and Northwood allowed her to continue to develop meaningful relationships even during this last, challenging time of her life. Glen was well loved.
The family is grateful for the dedicated care provided initially at QEII, and Parkland at the Gardens. Special thanks to the staff at Northwood Manor for their compassionate care provided since September, 2014, and Betsy Allard, Heather MacLean and Leone Fougere for their loving encouragement. We are grateful to Rev Debbie Aitkin of Rockingham United Church and their Pastoral Care Team. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Glen's life will be held 5 July at 2:00 pm in Rockingham United Church. For those who wish to make a donation in memory of Glen, the family has suggested the Northwood Foundation.
