Elsie was born in Sydney, spent summers on the Mira and moved to Halifax as a young adult. She attended Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Dalhousie University where she was an active member of Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity and participated fully in campus life. After a short time working at the Halifax Pathology Lab, she devoted her energies to raising her family amid family and friends in the village of Jollimore. She participated in village life, including as a contributing member of the congregation of Parkhill United Church and local Girl Guides. She remained engaged as an alumna of Alpha Gamma Delta, attending the 23rd International Fraternity Convention (1962) as President of Alpha Eta Alumnae Chapter. She was a skilled seamstress and knitter and taught knitting for Community Education. She was an avid swimmer and spent hours at the Dingle Beach with friends, encouraging the same of her children. Later she became a long-time member of the Waegwoltic Club and carried on her lane swimming there and socialized on the pool deck in the sun. Many friends will remember fun with her at the “Ladies’ Birthday Parties” at various cottages, and her children will remember that she instilled in them the belief that they can do anything to which they put their mind.
Elsie was predeceased by her husband Roy Jollimore, her parents, John T. and Margaret (Macaulay) Cruickshank, and her brother John F Cruickshank. Elsie is survived by daughters Margaret Hopkins, Bedford; Marilyn (Donald Cramb), Nanaimo, B.C.; and son David (Cherie), Halifax; grandchildren, Michael (Heather) Hopkins, Erin, Kate and Noah Jollimore; great grandchildren, Asher and Piper Hopkins; nephew John King; nieces Judy (King) Grant, Lynn (Cruickshank) McRae, Christine (Cruickshank) Andrews and many Macaulay, Ferguson and Cruickshank cousins.
