It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband, father and grandfather on Friday, February 5th, 2016 at the VG Site – QEII after a courageous battle with Leukemia.
Brian, born on September 14, 1950, was the son of Gwendolyn Meisner Gough and the late Eric Borden Gough. He was a lifelong resident of Halifax. Brian leaves behind his loving wife of 37 years, Susan (Murphy), his brother Blair (Kathy), son Andrew (Alexandra Vihvelin) and daughters Laura and Amy, all of Halifax. Brian took great pride in granddaughter, Adelaide Elizabeth. He doted on “pop’s girl” and she provided him with tremendous joy. He is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews as well as by lifelong friend, Peter Wright. He was predeceased by infant daughter, Anna Marie.
Brian was a well-respected member of the insurance industry known both personally and professionally for his honesty, loyalty and integrity. He joined Marsh Adjustment Limited in 1974 and served as its president from 1995 to 2015. Over his 42 year career he served as the President of the Insurance Institute of NS, National President of the Canadian Independent Adjusters Association and was a Fellow Chartered Loss Adjuster.
Brian devoted a great deal of his life to his work but he saved the best part of himself for his family. His children will be forever grateful for the generosity, wisdom and selflessness that were the hallmarks of his fatherhood. He created a beautiful home in which he loved his wife and raised his children in comfort and security. He was a provider who considered his own needs last. The steadiness of his love and the gentleness of his counsel are traits which he instilled upon his family and which we will seek to emulate. A lifelong daily swimmer, Brian loved the saltwater and the sun. His family will forever think of dad on the beaches of St. Margaret’s Bay tossing us a football or calling us into the water to join him.
The family would like to extend its profound gratitude to the Hematology team and the Medical Day Unit at the VG and to all those who generously donated the blood products from which Brian benefited during the course of his illness.
Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Wednesday, February 10th, from 6-9pm with a Memorial Service Thursday, February 11th at St. Theresa’s Parish on North Street at 11am. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation of blood or platelets through Canadian Blood Services.
